Winery of the Week: Walsh Family Wine

Walsh Family Wine is one of the Loudoun County‘s newer wineries.   On a surprisingly cool (for August) summer day we spent the afternoon visiting this wonderful vineyard and winery that is located off Route 7 near Purcellville, Virginia.  I had been hearing good things about this place, and all of them were evident today.  We arrived about 1:30 PM on a Tuesday, and even on a weekday there was a decent crowd.

The winery is found among a mix of homes and small agricultural land making the approach easy and simple.  The large tasting room building welcomes you upon arrival with a wonderful, welcoming staff inside.  As COVID 19 is still an issue we didn’t spend much time in the tasting room, but it is beautiful.

We chose to sit on the family friendly outdoor patio (we had our children with us), but the outdoor seating options are varied and plenty.  Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and even one table located under the trees are available providing a nice choice of sun or shade.  The vines are close to the seating and part of the view regardless of where you choose to sit.  We also enjoyed the wonderful garden located next to the patio.

We ordered two tasting flights, one red and one white.  We were also each given a complimentary glass of Rosé while our flights were prepared.  The wines were very good, though we definitely liked the whites more than reds.  Unlike most Virginia wineries, they produce Sauvignon Blanc (which is what most people pair with our local blue crabs).   Our favorite wine was the Rosé, but we also both liked the Sauvignon Blanc.  We purchased a bottle of both to take with us and enjoy at home.

The whole family enjoyed the perfect weather on the patio.  The children had bottles of Coke and read while we savored the wines.  Liam and Fionnuala also took the opportunity explore the grounds and take pictures of the wonderful landscaping.  Like some of our other recent winery visits, the decor and landscaping here are more attractive than many of the larger wineries.  We are very much looking forward to a return trip.  I imagine the setting is impressive in the fall!
